Roses are red,
violets are blue,
even the coldest winter day
is so cozy with you.
Okay, cheesy poems aside, I need you to know, winter onesie, how very truly I love you.
Winter in Denmark is no joke. From November to April, the days are chilly and dreary and incredibly short. Taking the dog out for a stroll in the park or walking to the market to pick up dinner require a long ritual of bundling and layering — wool base layers and sweatshirts, jackets and gloves, scarves and hats, a suit of armor to protect you from the cold rain or blustery wind that surely awaits you outside.
It didn’t take much of this for me to start taking note of how other Danes dressed themselves for the winter weather. And soon, the most delightful piece of winter couture emerged, a real surprise in a place where clothes are so simple and understated — a quilted jumpsuit!
At first, I only really saw kids wearing them, yet another reason to envy the youngest of us for getting to have all the fun. My jealousy aside, readers, there is no sight quite as a cute as a baby all zipped up in a puffy, patterned jumpsuit — they’re like rosy-cheeked little Michelin Men, all grins and rolls and giggles.
But as the winter days kept slogging along, I began to see women — grown women, not just adorable college students and twenty-somethings — wearing the same quilted jumpsuits. Never in the bright colors or bold patterns that kids often wore, but a jumpsuit in solid black or beige is still a fun prospect, especially if you add a bright scarf or jolly beret.
I had to find one.
Thankfully, they are easily acquired. Sure, you can go to a rugged outdoors shop or a fancy boutique and find them in stock, and that’s great. Or, you can do what I did, and shop for one at your favorite grocery store. For real! Just go on and grab some fresh bread, a nice bottle of wine, and a quilted jumpsuit. I actually did shop around, but I discovered they were all mostly the same thing, and the price (and convenience) of a grocery store option was hard to beat. Plus, it’s way more fun to say.
And while I know people call them jumpsuits or flight suits, I think we need to call them what they really are: onesies.
My winter onesie was 300 DKK (which is about $40), and I have to say, worth every kroner. I literally never have to think about what I’m wearing outside!
Is it fashionable? No. Do I immediately regret wearing it the moment I need to pee? Yes. Is it a good look for me? I mean, is it a good look for anyone?
But none of that matters because it is pure joy. And if you don’t believe me, just watch this — she’s in Copenhagen, where it looks like the winter onesie is helping lots of other folks live their best cold weather days, too.

I did a quick Google and saw that J. Crew actually sold them this winter! They’re pretty much out of season now with shops all gearing up for spring, but — some unsolicited advice — try to scoop one up on clearance. You’ll be so happy with yourself when you dig it out next winter. Maybe even as happy as the Danes.
How I miss those!
